For this is the love of God, that we KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God OVERCOMES THE WORLD. And this is the victory that has OVERCOME THE WORLD—our faith.
I John 5:3-4 NKJV
What victory did God gave to those who are born again? Is John referring to overcoming demon spirits, sickness and poverty curse? Sounds good, unfortunately, none of these themes appear in John's train of thought here. The only thing mentioned in John's train of thought is KEEPING HIS COMMANDMENTS.
In fact, in chapter 2, the only reference to "the world" is when John tells his recipients NOT to love the things of the world. THAT is how we overcome the world, by forsaking our love for earthly material wants.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
I John 2:15-17 NKJV
In fact the theme of "Walking in the Light", beckons the fact that he who is born again, who walks in the light "Abides in him", and he who KEEPS HIS COMMANDMENTS" abides in him, and will not love thing things of this world.
If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
I John 1:6-7 NKJV
If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.
I John 2:29 NKJV
Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
I John 3:6 NKJV
Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
I John 3:24 NKJV
No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
I John 4:12-13 NKJV
And this is how love perfect love drives out all fear. When our Faith is proven by our love for one another by actual works.
Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.
I John 4:17-19 NKJV
